ChromeOS binary support

Postby Hungry_Man » Sat Jun 22, 2013 2:26 am

It would be nice to get ChromeOS binary support. I think if the plugin were offered in the chrome web store that's all it would really take, right? I don't know what hurdles there are here. Considering how low powered many ChromeOS devices are it would be nice to be able to use the plugin.

Chrome OS doesn't support NPAPI plugins. Once PNaCL support is finalized (hopefully later this year), we hope to include a PNaCL plugin. The API is much more limited, but we'll at least be able to offer faster encryption operations.

Great, thank you. PPAPI isn't an option?

PNaCL is a part of PPAPI. We could use NaCL right now, but we'd have to include binaries for x86, x64, and ARM, which would cause our extension to be bigger than we'd like. Once PNaCL is available, we'll only need a single binary.

So PNaCl is about ready, it seems. It's in the beta version and on by default for 31 - I'm sure there's no one already working on it or anything and I'm not expecting much of an answer... but I'm getting a new Chromebook and I'd love to hear something about LastPass on it :P

We're pretty much ready to go. Once pepper_31 goes stable (which I would expect to happen on November 12, 2013), we should be able to include our PNaCL component in the extension.

Please note that it won't add any new functionality to the extension already available in Chrome OS, but it should speed up certain encryption and decryption operations.

Ah, I'd expected it to take a bit longer, given that it needs to be compiled with a specific toolchain and conform to a few things, but that's very cool. Thank you.

Dear all,

At the moment it seems that I can't add or view attachments embedded in secure notes on Chrome OS. This requires binary version of the extension. Will this change when this new version is published?

File access is very limited in NaCl. I believe viewing image attachments will work, but no other attachment functionality will work, at least at first.
