Encrypt Files and Folders

Postby incoherent » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:57 pm

It would be great if you could use LastPass (e.g. the future desktop client) to encrypt files and folders on local disk.

What I'm looking for is this kind of functionality:

No, Lastpass should only fill forms. There are good free and open source programs to encrypt personal data, for example http://www.truecrypt.org/.

Why not choose a very long master password for Truecrypt, then save this Truecrypt master password with Lastpass? This way you have encrypted files, secured with a very long master password, which you don't even know, you know only your Lastpass master password, which is enough.

But of course if you forget your lastpass master password, you loose all your files forever! So be aware.

No, in future releases LastPass will do more than that (Seamless Synchronization of Bookmarks & Favorites, https://lastpass.com/roadmap.php).

If this feature is implemented, I see no real difference in also keeping files/folders safe - either encrypted on local disk or encrypted files uploaded to LastPass servers. As I see it, it's just...
...one step further towards our goal of LastPass being The Last Password You'll Have To Remember

I agree with incoherent. I came to request offering or partnering up with a data storage service. I'd like to be able to store my lastpass information and some encrypted files in the same or a linked account. Tax documents etc.

I don't know if LastPass goals would include that, but I used to use an awesome program called A-lock, text encryption and folder/file encryption. Good password manager to for keeping the keys used with A-lock.
