I believe that the master password I use on lastpass is only kept by me
I open the lastpass browser extension, type in the password, and click the continue button
the extension converts my password to a salted hash and sends that hash to the lastpass servers
and they send my encrypted vault to me and it is opened on my computer.
A couple of questions arise:
providing I know my email address and password, supposing I
had a catastrophic disk failure , can I simply reinstall on a new disk
install a new browser, get the lastpass extension, type in my username and master password
and I am good to go?
Do I need to back anything up, so that if a catastrophic disk failure happens on my computer
I can restore the lastpass files and then use my master password and username

Yes, you would simply sign in using your current username and password. Assuming you have an internet connection, LastPass will always have a current encrypted copy of your vault. This is how you are able to easily use the service across multiple computers and devices.
