Windows 7 says lastpass did not install properly

Postby schmidtj » Thu Jul 22, 2010 3:42 pm

I have several issues on my Win 7 64bit machine.
When I run the installer (64bit Lastpass on IE8 32bit) the install runs to completion but Win 7 then pops up "program did not run successfully", "search for solution", "program did install correctly". I chose the option to say it installed correctly. Not sure if that is the correct thing to do or what error Win 7 detected with the installer. That said, even thought I have IE8, Firefox and Chrome the Lastpass installer does not install the Chrome plugin(?). I can install the Chrome piece as a standalone download successfully.

Now that it's installed, EVERY time I exit IE8 I get the Win 7 popup that IE did not end properly, "search for a solution" or just dismiss the message. I sent this up to Lastpass support, they asked for the diags in the message, I sent those to support and have heard nothing since.

Are these problems unique to me?

Windows XP seems to run Lastpass with fewer problems. The installer runs fine, all three browser plugins get installed BUT IE8 on XP will crash on exit 10% or so of the time.

I'd love to use Lastpass but these nusances are something I could do without.

I'd be willing to supply any information, just tell me what is needed to get Lastpass installed and running smoothly. I gave Lastpass a try based on Steve Gibson's glowing endorsement and don't want to let him down.

Try this version of the installer - uncheck Chrome & Firefox.

Just so we are on the same page, do I just run this in top of my existing installs? or uninstall all of lastpass first and then run this new installer?

Tnx,

Run over top of the installer.

No difference. IE8 still crashes on exit.
For what it's worth. Lastpass->Tools->About did not change.
I was at 1.69.0 Jul 12,2010 11:53:26 before running the installer referenced above
and still am after running it.

The test installer improved things in two ways:
1) When the install process completed I did not get the message "program did not run successfully".
2) IE8 on Win 7 64bit does not crash when I exit IE8 and the Lastpass plugin is enabled.

Things it did not fix:
1) The installed (still) doesn't install the Chrome plugin as part of the install process.
2) It detects Firefox and even with it checked the Firefox plugin was not installed.

Hope this helps.

We're pretty sure we've improved the IE8 crash on exit here: https://lastpass.com/lastpass_x64pre.exe and https://lastpass.com/lastpasspre.exe

https://lastpass.com/lastpass_x64pre.exe is the installer I used on my x64 machine. Interestingly, it worked on x86 too. I will try https://lastpass.com/lastpasspre.exe on x86 and see what happens.

Only one instance of Chrome and Firefox per PC.

I have just experienced both the "failed to install" message at the end of the installation, and the chrome plugin has not been installed.

I have Windows 7 64-bit with Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385 64-bit and Chrome 10.0.0648.82. I do not have Firefox installed.

Cheers,
Simon
